Since SF got mugged the night before, our trip to Ssese Islands had to be postponed. Sometimes there are more important things to do than travel around (shocking, I know)! We spent most of the day in and out of the police station, but we managed to see the Botanical Gardens in between.
There are Vervet monkeys everywhere! We got really close to these guys.
Adorable! Apparently they steal people’s things. I’ll believe it when I see it.
Because we couldn’t visit Ssese Islands (where we were planning on staying overnight), we found ourselves accommodations in the coolest place ever: the Uganda Wildlife Education Centre – a place like a zoo, but environmentally way better. The UWEC is modeled on conservation education; they rescue and rehabilitate injured, confiscated or orphaned wildlife! They charge to enter, but money goes back to the animals and maintaining the centre. More zoos need to be like this. UWEC also offers places to stay in huts called bandas. We stayed near Lake Victoria in this banda:
…and were greeted by an eland the next morning!
We toured the “zoo” the following day, so stay tuned for lots of pictures!
